These vessels were used between 1804 and 1818 to take many Swabian settlers to Russia by water.
From Ulm, they traveled with these vessels on the Danube to Ismail on the Danube Black Sea estuary and then along the coast to Ovidiopol near Odessa. This type of vessel was a long cargo boat with a house-like superstructure. It was about 30 meters long with a center freeboard of around 150 to 160 centimeters, a maximum width of 7.5 meters and a superstructure length of about 6 meters. Overall height was about 4 meters. These boats had two oars at the bow or amidships and 2 or 4 at the stern and these were used both for propulsion and steering. Poor organization and lack of experience resulted in many being subjected to overly hard conditions on board.- |
